Learning how to twist in yoga is important because many poses require twists including Revolved Triangle Pose, Half Lord of the Fishes Pose, and Marichi’s Pose. It is easy as a beginner to start twisting with a rounded back, which is something you never want to do.

Sometimes in yoga, participants will twist with a round back which can lead to injury and pain. Follow these steps to twist in yoga without pain:
Step 1: Sit up tall from your hips with a straight back, legs extended out in front of you.
Step 2: Roll your shoulders down away from your ears and squeeze your shoulder blades together.
Step 3: Keeping your left leg extended, bend your right knee, bringing your foot close to your body and keeping your right foot planted on the mat.
Step 4: Pull your left elbow across your right knee, sit up tall, twisting from the shoulders and pulling your right shoulder back while your left shoulder comes forward.
Step 5: Keeping the spine long, your gaze might go over your right shoulder.
